Awesome Fall Program

A busy fall program is underway for the new school year now that we have completed our move to new facilities that provide a  home-like atmosphere.

The Fall backpacking trip will be in the Weminuche Wilderness Area near Durango, Colorado.  Students will ride the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad and relive the history of the Old West settlers and miners.  The mystery of the Anasazi Indians will come to life at the Mesa Verde National Park with its archeological museum and visitor center.   During the week long trip, students will find plenty of time to continue their normal classroom studies in the one of the grandest outdoor settings in America.

A community service project has been scheduled to improve a migratory bird habitat in Houston.  The project is a collaboration for HOLA with Urban Harvest, Bayou Preservation Association and St. John's School.

A Guatemala Perspective

In May, 2003, HOLA students spent two weeks in Guatemala.  The students studied Spanish and the Mayan dialect, Q'uechi, lived in a Mayan village for three days, trekked through the jungle, and studied ancient Mayan culture in Tikal.  Their outdoor adventures included caving, hiking, horseback riding, dug-out canoe travel, and night-time jungle hikes.  The trip gave the students an eye-opening cultural experience, a wealth of knowledge, and many lasting memories.

Model UN In Monterrey

Monterrey made the perfect setting for a Model UN Conference.  HOLA journeyed to Monterrey Mexico in the spring of 2003 for a three day conference.  Our students acted as representatives for Japan, Indonesia, Norway, Guatemala, and Nicaragua in the Commission on the Status of Women.  All involved had a valuable, first-hand look at international politics and the functioning of a political body such as the United Nations.

 Art Project Takes
To The Streets

HOLA students designed and created an entry in the Houston Art Car Parade that occurred during May of 2003.  The name of the car was Autodidactic.  As fitting for our school, the car had an educational theme.  Each student contributed to the design and decoration of the car.  Proud teachers and students paraded through downtown Houston.
