Outdoors and Environmental Education 4 Multi-disciplinary Outdoor-based Skills Training and Project-Based Environmental Awareness Activities: Conservation/Natural Resources, Leave No Trace Ethics, Plant/Animal Identification, Wilderness Experience including Backpacking, Camping, Rock Climbing, Kayaking/Canoeing, White Water Rafting, SCUBA, Mountain Biking, Primitive Earth Skills, Orienteering, Outdoor Leadership and Group Dynamics, Journal Writing, and Outdoor Literature. Extensive travel and field study including travel abroad, extended backpacking adventure-based, experiential outdoor learning integrated to core academic subjects, and ecology and the environment.
Multi-Cultural Studies & Expeditionary Travel 4 Extended Backpacking/Wilderness Expeditions, Privitive Earth Skills, Archeology and Anthropology. Regional Studies: Native, Local, Regional and Non-native
Social Studies/Historical Perspectives through architecture, music, art, literature, and language.
Community Service Projects 60 hours of documented community service. Involvement in projects-based community service activities within our local commuity, as well as in the villages and communities we visit during travel abroad.
Helping others is an integral and rewarding component and requirement within our curriculum. HOLA students value and enjoy participation in activities which benefit others and help to make our world a better place.
A few examples of past service projects include volunteer work at: Medical Bridges, KPFT, Houston Food Bank, Star of Hope, Katrina Recovery Efforts, clean ups of local bays, bayous, and beaches, migratory bird habitat construction, delivery of school and medical supplies to Bakanja School in Kenya, Peace Corp program in Trujillo, Peru, and lots of trail and river clearing when camping, backpacking, and canoeing! 
Elective / Independent Study Credit given with extensive documentation including portfolio and project evaluation. Based on individual interests and needs.
Examples of past projects: Marine Aquatic Habitat Study, Juggling and Uni-cycling, Film and Motion Pictures, Organic Gardening, Skateboarding and Half-pipe Design, Dart Frog Breeding, and Garage Band-guitar, drums, keyboard, composition and performance.

RECOMMENDED DIPLOMA: HOLA expects all students to have a minimum of 26 credits in order to graduate.

EXEMPLARY ACHIEVEMENT DIPLOMA: 28 credits including one advanced lab-based science course and one advanced math course and 60 hours of documented projects-based community service.

DISTINGUISHED AND EXEMPLARY DIPLOMA: 30+ credits including one advanced lab-based science course, one advanced math course, 60 hours of documented projects-based community service, 2 credits in both Outdoors/Environmental Education and Mulitcultural Study/Travel, and participated in at least two trips abroad.

Transfer Credits are weighted based upon the grading scale and school where the student was enrolled when credit was obtained, when that information is available.

(*) These specified courses are designated for non-college-bound students requiring remediation in core  subjects
